What is the Diocese doing?

  • Rolling programme to insulate all 330 parsonages and updating boilers, using grants through Westcountry Energy Action (WEA) and Local Authorities.
  • Audit of Old Deanery energy use by Envision, and developed an action plan.
  • Outline audit carried out of Bishop’s Palace.
  • Arranged feasibility studies of energy efficiency and renewable energy in churches, through DARE and the Carbon Trust.
  • Arranged energy studies of four church halls carried out by Envision.
  • Offering free low-energy light bulbs to churches, through WEA.
  • Measuring energy use in up to 624 buildings.
  • Diocesan Advisory Committee encouraging refurbishment of churches using more sustainable materials.

  • Churches and organisations who have had energy studies.
  • Switching off Cathedral floodlights for Earth Hour 2009.
  • Biomass boiler at St Paul in Gulworthy. Case study available.
  • Photovoltaic cells (PVs) at St John in Shiphay. Case study available.
  • Wolborough St Paul (in Newton Abbot), Revelstoke St Peter (in Noss Mayo) are looking into PVs.
  • St Edward in Shaugh Prior are looking into PVs and heat pumps.
  • Zoned heating at Prysten Hall, St Andrew, Plymouth. Case study under development.
  • Trickle heating at All Saints in Okehampton, All Saints in Kenton, St George in Modbury, Clayhanger and Throwleigh (base of tower).
Churchyards
  • Plans for redevelopment of the Cathedral Green using sustainable materials and planting of native trees.
  • Torre Churchyard won a Planting Places Award in 2009 for best practice in engaging the community
Waste
  • Composting toilets at St Andrew in Chardstock and St Mary in Luppitt.  Case studies under development.
  • Tree Bog at St Philip & James in Escot.  Case study available.
