The Diocese has been aware of the rising price of fuel and its impact on personal and parish budgets. To counter this, we have negotiated a bulk-buying scheme with Ecotricity, which offers good-value energy, whilst reducing our fossil-fuel dependency and carbon footprints.
How to apply for the scheme
Households (clergy and members of congregations):
Ecotricity has been building wind turbines and selling electricity across the country since 1996. It currently supplies 30% of the electricity it sells from its own renewable sources (mostly wind). The remaining 70% comes from the electricity market: with the domestic New Energy tariff, the 70% is brown electricity; and with the New Energy Plus tariff, the 70% is green electricity. So just under half of the electricity it supplies is from green sources. Ecotricity uses its revenue to invest in more green sources, so this share from green sources is always increasing. Over the last six years, it spent more than ten times per customer building new sources of green electricity than any of the ‘big six’ energy suppliers. It is now branching out into selling gas using the same principle. Initially the gas will come from fossil fuel sources, and Ecotricity will invest the revenue back into creating new sources of green biogas made from organic waste and similar sources. As the number of customers grows, so will the amount of new green gas made. For more information about Ecotricity, the sources of the energy it supplies, and its services, please see www.ecotricity.co.uk. As at May 2010, Ecotricity is offering gas only to domestic properties, but expects to be able to offer gas to businesses from early 2011. The two opt-in schemes currently being offered are therefore as follows. See below for more detail.
Dual 'eco' fuel – green electricity and gas scheme for householdsDownload as leaflet (pdf)This scheme applies to the homes of both clergy and members of congregations. If you are interested in a quote for electricity and/or gas, please contact Ecotricity on 08000 302302 and cite code EXD1. Ecotricity will then take you through the simple change process. Ecotricity’s prices for domestic electricity and gas consumers are matched to the standard prices of the major energy suppliers in the region. For Devon, this means EdF (formerly SWEB) and British Gas. Indicative prices are given below – note that these may be out-of-date as energy prices are volatile. Electricity prices are based on Ecotricity’s New Energy tariff. Ecotricity also offers the New Energy Plus tariff, for customers who wish to be provided with 100% renewable energy, at an extra 0.5 p/kWh. Dual fuel contracts and discounts for paying by standing order are also on offer. You may be able to get a better deal if you have already switched to another big supplier, but you will not be making an effective difference to global warming.

Green electricity scheme for churchesDownload as leaflet (pdf)This scheme applies to churches, church halls and offices, and church schools. If you are interested in a quote for electricity, please contact Ecotricity on 08000 302302 and cite code EXD2. Ecotricity will then take you through the simple change process. Some churches are on domestic gas meters, and they will also be able to benefit from the gas scheme now, again please contact Ecotricity on 08000 302302 and cite code EXD2. Ecotricity expects to be able to supply gas to churches on commercial meters from early 2011.
Exeter Cathedral signed up to Ecotricity in April 2010. The Diocesan Offices and more than 30 churches such as Holy Trinity Barnstaple, All Saints Kingsbridge and St George and All Saints Winkleigh are also buying their electricity through the scheme.
Indicative electricity prices are given below – note that these may be out-of-date as energy prices are volatile. The Standard Price below would be the standard business tariff, and the Discounted Price would be the tariff being offered to churches, offices and church halls for 50% renewable energy. Ecotricity can also supply 100% renewable energy, at an extra 0.5 p/kWh. You may be able to get a better deal if you have already switched to another big supplier, but you will not be making an effective difference to global warming. The contract would be flexible, with 28 days' notice to terminate. Do not worry if you are in a fixed-term contract with your supplier, as Ecotricity can schedule your switch-over for a date in the future.
